A Tarpan Horse Stallion successfully contributes to help conserve the breed

October 2023

Debbie’s report. “ I am proud and happy to report that Grayson's fertility testing at Equine Reproductive Concepts (my place of employment), was a complete success.  He is back in his home pasture after 3 weeks of training/testing to test for fertility, and we have enough viable semen to freeze for shipment to Canada.  I am thrilled to report he was calm, sensible, and respectful through the entire process, and considering he had never been off the farm, never been in a trailer, and never in a stall and surrounded by about 50 mares in heat...he was a rock star!  On day one he learned to respect a chain both over his nose and in his mouth to keep everyone safe in the breeding shed, and to mounting a phantom using a tease mare.  On his first trip to the breeding shed, Dr. Dippert was able to collect enough semen to start the process of testing for viable sperm, and by day 2 he had the drill down.  Great news!  At the tender age of 4, which is at the "young" end of the stallion maturity spectrum, Grayson's semen is viable enough to freeze for shipment, to include Canada.  We now have a total of 12 doses in storage for shipment. "I can't wait for one of his foals to hit the ground.  I know it's a ways down the road, but one step closer to achieving our goal of conserving Tarpan horses. I want to thank everyone involved for their contributions and unending dedication to this herd.  It really does take a village!”
